The Better Business Bureau consistently ranks post-disaster roofing contractors among the top categories of consumer fraud complaints each year. Knowing the warning signs before someone knocks on your door could save you from a shoddy repair job, a worthless warranty, or outright theft of your insurance payout.

What Is a Storm Chaser Roofer?

A storm chaser is a contractor - or someone posing as one - who travels to areas recently hit by severe weather to solicit roofing work. They are not necessarily all fraudulent: some are legitimate roofers from nearby regions who expand their service area after a major event. However, the combination of transient operations, high-pressure sales tactics, and a market flooded with inexperienced crews creates conditions where fraud, poor workmanship, and abandoned jobs are far more common than with established local contractors.

Ask for a verifiable street address and look it up on Google Maps before signing anything.

2. Offering to Waive or "Cover" Your Deductible

This is the single biggest red flag - and it is not just suspicious, it is illegal in most states. When a contractor offers to waive your deductible, absorb it into their pricing, or give you a "cash rebate" equal to your deductible, they are effectively committing insurance fraud. Here is why: your insurer calculates your claim payout with the assumption that you will pay your deductible out of pocket. If the contractor artificially inflates the repair scope or price to absorb the deductible, the insurer is paying for work that was not done - that is fraud, and both the contractor and the homeowner can face criminal charges.

A legitimate contractor welcomes comparison shopping because they are confident in their quality and pricing. Any contractor who pressures you to sign a contract on the spot - especially while standing on your doorstep - should be turned away.

4. Requesting Large Upfront Payment or Full Payment Before Work Begins

Legitimate roofing contractors typically require a deposit of 10-30% to order materials, with the balance due upon satisfactory completion. Any contractor requesting 50% or more upfront - or, in the most egregious cases, asking for the full insurance check before work begins - is either poorly capitalized (a financial risk to your job) or planning to disappear with your money. Never sign over an insurance check to a contractor before the work is completed and inspected.

5. Vague or One-Page Contracts

A professional roofing contract should specify: exact materials to be used (manufacturer, product line, color, weight class), full scope of work (tear-off layers, decking repair provisions, flashing replacement), start and completion date commitments, warranty terms for both materials and workmanship, and a clear payment schedule.
